Granville R. Amos

Brigadier General Amos' last billet was Deputy Director for Operations, National Military Command Center, J-3, Joint Staff, Organization of the JCS, Washington, D.C.

General Amos was born in Culpeper, Virginia. Upon graduation from Virginia Military Institute, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in June 1965 through the Platoon Leaders Class program. After completing The Basic School at Quantico, Va., in January 1966, he was assigned as a platoon commander with the 2d Combat Engineer Battalion, 2d Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, N.C. In October 1966, he reported to flight school, NAS Pensacola, Fla., and was designated a Naval Aviator on November 9, 1967.

Assigned to HMH-462, MCAS El Toro, Calif, from December 1967 to January 1968, General Amos qualified in the CH-53A. He was subsequently transferred to HMH-463 at Marble Mountain, Vietnam, serving as the Maintenance Administrative Officer until April 1968. He was reassigned as the Assistant Operations Officer for HMM-163 until the squadron's return to CONUS in September 1968, and completed his tour serving as the Assis-tant Operations Officer for MAG-16.

Following his tour in Vietnam, General Amos returned to the 2d Marine Division and served consecutively as the Air Liaison Officer for the 2d Marines; Air Liaison Officer for the 1st Battalion, 2d Marines and for the 2d Battalion, 8th Marines in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

In June 1970, he completed the Amphibious Warfare School at Quantico, and was assigned to HMH-362. The following June, was assigned as the Assistant Operations Officer for HNM-263 and deployed to the Mediterranean. Upon his return, he was assigned as the Personnel Officer of MAG-26 until June 1974, when ordered to HMH-462, Futenma, Okinawa. Serving as the squadron S-4 and S-1, he participated in the evacuation of Phnom Pehn, Cambodia, and Saigon, Vietnam.

Following his return from overseas in July 1975, General Amos served as the Assistant Operations Officer of MAG-26, until July 1976, when he was reassigned as the Executive Officer of HMH-461.

He reported to Headquarters Marine Corps, Washington, D.C., in November 1978, where he served on the Naval Council of Personnel Boards, as an Action Officer in the Manpower Department, and then as the Administrative Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Aviation.

In August 1982, General Amos returned to MAG-26, to serve as Group SA until his assignment to HMM-261 as Commanding Officer in December 1982. While serving in this assignment, he participated in operations in Grenada and Beirut, Lebanon. Upon completion of his tour as Squadron Commander, he was transferred to Headquarters, 2d Marine Aircraft Wing, CA, MCAS Cherry Point, N.C., where he served as the G-3. Ordered back overseas in July 1985, he was assigned as the Wing Inspector, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, Okinawa.

From 1986 to 1988, General Amos served as the Deputy Director, Marine Corps Command and Staff College. He returned to Headquarters Marine Corps in June 1988, for duty as the Aviation Colonels' Monitor. During August 1989, he was assigned duty as the Commanding Officer of the 2d Marine Expeditionary Unit, FMF Atlantic, Camp Lejeune, N.C. While serving in this capacity, be was selected in December 1989 for promotion to brigadier general.

He was advanced to his present grade on September 21, 1990, and was assigned duty as the Assistant Wing Commander (Fwd), 3d Marine Aircraft Wing, MCAS, El Toro, Calif., in October 1990. General Amos served in this capacity until May 1991, when he returned to Headquarters Marine Corps for Special Assignment to the Director of Personnel Management/Procurement Division, (M&RA) in May 1991.

Brigadier General Amos' personal decorations include: the Legion of Merit with gold star in lieu of a second award; Meritorious Service Medal; Air Medal with numeral "25" and Combat "V"; Joint Service Commendation Medal; Navy Commendation Medal with Combat "V" and gold star in lieu of a second award; and various unit awards.
