The Holy Bible Regarding Slavery

If thou buy a Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing, Exodus 21:2

Only 4 of the following 13 translators recognize the futility of claiming that a "servant" can be bought and sold, even though Webster's Dictionary describes that the difference between slaves and servants is precisely that a servant performs his tasks voluntarily and a slave does not.

Servant

SERV'ANT, [L. servans, from servo, to keep or hold; properly one that waits, that is, stops, holds, attends, or one that is bound.]

1. A person, male or female, that attends another for the pupose of performing menial offices for him, ot who is employed by another for such offices or for other labor, and is subject to his command. The word is correlative to master. Servant differs from slave, as the servant's subjection to a master is voluntary, the slave's is not. Every slave is a servant, but every servant is not a slave.

Exodus 21:2

(ASV) If thou buy a Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.

(BBE) If you get a Hebrew servant for money, he is to be your servant for six years, and in the seventh year you are to let him go free without payment.

(CEV) If you buy a Hebrew slave, he must remain your slave for six years. But in the seventh year you must set him free, without cost to him.

(Darby) If thou buy a Hebrew bondman, six years shall he serve; and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.

(DRB) If thou buy a Hebrew servant, six years shall he serve thee; in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.

(GNB) If you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve you for six years. In the seventh year he is to be set free without having to pay anything.

(GW) "Whenever you buy a Hebrew slave, he will be your slave for six years. In the seventh year he may leave as a free man, without paying for his freedom.

(KJV) If thou buy a Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.

(KJVA) If thou buy a Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.

(RSV) When you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve six years, and in the seventh he shall go out free, for nothing.

(WEB) If you buy a Hebrew servant, he shall serve six years and in the seventh he shall go out free without paying anything.

(Webster) If thou shalt buy a Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall depart free for nothing.

(YLT) `When thou buyest a Hebrew servant--six years he doth serve, and in the seventh he goeth out as a freeman for nought;

Strong's Concordance defines the Hebrew word "ebed" as follows:

H5650 ebed

eh'-bed

From H5647; a servant: - X bondage, bondman, [bond-] servant, (man-) servant.

Not included in this definition, of course, is the word "slave".  As a result, none of the 801 occurrences of the word "servant" in the Holy Bible ever appear as "slave" in the KJV [read: King James translation], seriously distorting the beliefs of the Israelites towards slavery.

Strong's includes the definition "slave" for the Hebrew word "amah" which appears in the Holy Bible 519 times, but never does it occur as the word "slave" in the KJV, instead translating it as "handmaid", "maid", "maidservant", "bondwoman", "handmaiden", and "bondmaid".

H519'a^ma^h

aw-maw'

Apparently a primitive word; a maidservant or female slave: - (hand-) bondmaid (-woman,) maid (-servant).

Strong's includes the definition "female slave" for the Hebrew word "shipcha" which appears 62 times in the Holy Bible, but never does the KJV use this word, instead translating it as "handmaid", "maid", "maidservant", "womenservant", "handmaiden", "maiden", "bondmaid", and "wench".

H8198 shiphcha^h

shif-khaw'

Feminine from an unused root meaning to spread out (as a family; see H4940); a female slave (as a member of the household): - (bond-, hand-) maid (-en, -servant), wench, bondwoman, womanservant.

The word "slave" appears only two times in KJV where it is translated from the Greek word "soma":

G4983 soma

so'-mah

From G4982; the body (as a sound whole), used in a very wide application, literally or figuratively: - bodily, body, slave.

Conversely, the word "slave" appears 294 times in God's New Bible, 281 times in the Contemporary English Version, 248 times in God's Word, and 141 times in the Revised Standard Version.
