Re: The unconstitutional control of government members of the legal profession.
Dear Chief Justice Rehnquist:
The undersigned is in the process of putting together the case for the removal of all lawyers from elective office in the legislative and executive branches of government on the grounds that such control is unconstitutional.
The basic arguments are presented in the accompanying documents, along with a letter from Mr. Albert Blaustein, a world-renowned constitutional lawyer confirming his agreement with those views. The position taken has been discussed at length with many people, both members and non-members of the legal profession. Not a single substantial argument has been offered in rebuttal.
Virtually everyone who is neither a member of the legal profession nor closely related to one, agrees with the position presented. In addition many lawyers also agree.
In the interests of judicial economy and fairness to all, I am inquiring of you whether you agree or disagree with the views presented prior to taking legal action on the matter. If you choose to answer, I would be grateful if you would do so by June 30, 1995, or at least advise by that date, that you will respond by a date certain. Failure to respond by that date will lead the undersigned to the conclusion that you nave no rebuttal arguments of substance to offer.
If I may I would like, with the greatest respect, to caution you as you examine the arguments presented, against the phenomenon of the human mind known as 'cognitive dissonance'. I have found this phenomenon present all too often and in control of the minds of many members of the legal profession, with whom the aforementioned matters were discussed.
Cognitive dissonance is that self serving characteristic of the mind that clouds issues otherwise clear as crystal to dear consciences otherwise deeply troubled, It transforms the mind's perception of good into evil and evil into good. It whitewashes wrong to make it appear right and sullies right to make it seem wrong. It overpowers intelligence and subdues logical argument. It stands firm, often to the death, against alt attempts to pierce its impervious armor of subconscious intentional blindness to truth. It appears to exist in most of us. I know I am not free of it.
Cognitive dissonance is born of the conflict between self-interest and conscience. It quiets the mind's turmoil when one's self interest harms others, by falsely persuading the conscious mind that the action taken is virtuous. It persuaded slaveholders that they were doing slaves a favor by transforming them from 'savages' into good Christians. It persuaded Catholic inquisitors that burning people at the stake for heresy was helping them save their soul, albeit at some small cost to their body. It persuaded the German people that they were a master race and that genocide was an acceptable solution to dispose of those perceived as unworthy. Only weeks ago it persuaded lunatics in this country that bombing buildings and killing innocent people is virtuous if it is thought to advance a particular political point of view.
Whenever a favored class argues in defense of its favored status, it is there. Whenever an argument is made that relies not on logical argument but on a particular interpretation based on alleged specialized knowledge, it is there. Whenever an argument is made that relies on an alleged special relationship with the deity, it is there. Whenever someone says 'I don't know why you are wrong, I just know that you are, it is there. A realization of the power and presence of cognitive dissonance within us is the first step in attempting to overcome it. History lists the tragedies that result from a failure to do so.
I look forward to hearing from you and thank you for your consideration in reviewing the enclosed material. Please feel free to distribute this material as well as your response as widely as you may deem desirable,
An example of cognitive dissonance.
