Nearly two-thirds of Americans were satisfied with the way things were going in the United States at the beginning of the year, but fewer than half offered this same positive response at the end of the year.

Gallup's long-standing question measuring satisfaction with "the way things are going in your own personal life" has shown little change throughout the year.

Americans had much more optimism about the direction of the economy at the beginning of the year than they did as the year came to a close. Nearly half of all Americans said conditions were getting better in January, compared with only about one-third who said so in December.
