Times Record Staff

A Fort Smith man was sentenced to 10 years in prison after he ran up close
to $9,000 in unpaid child support.

Wallace Cable Steward, 36, pleaded guilty Friday to non-support in
Crawford County Circuit Court. He was sentenced to 10 years in the
Arkansas Department of Correction with 7 1/2 years suspended, according to
court records.

Steward had been scheduled to begin making $65 weekly payments beginning
Jan. 20, 1998, the same day a divorce was decreed between him and his
wife, Kinda Davenport of Van Buren. He had not made a single payment,
according to prosecutor's records.

The couple were married in 1986 and have three children, ages 15, 14 and
11, according to court records.

In addition to his prison time, Steward will have to pay restitution of
$9,000 to cover the back child support, according to court records.

Steward has a lengthy criminal history, including a May 1996 guilty plea
to second-degree battery in Crawford County and five convictions for
driving while intoxicated, according to prosecutor's records.
